The February LACE lunch, held in the restaurant at Reads Hotel & Spa, was attended by 30 ladies.

After networking time over drinks, Glynis German welcomed everyone, and introduced herself as “space goddess” for Planet Space Self Storage (three locations on the island) www.planetspacestorage.com.  Glynis introduced each of the following Hotspot announcements from members.

First was Kate Mentink, on behalf of Europeos por España (EPORE www.epore.org), who announced the imminent opening of the European Centre for the Balearics, in Palma (opposite the Parliament building), following the model of the similar office in Brussels, which opened in 1985.  Foreigners starting a new business will be able to find information and advice here. The department will be open from Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-14:00 hrs for personal visits, phone or email enquiries. The centre won’t offer a lawyer or gestor service, but will be able to “point you in the right direction”. Kate, who will have an office in the Centre, said that many people didn’t know that there might be funding available to them from Europe, or the fiscal advantages of knowing the law. The new Ley de Emprendedores had already been translated into an English document and an English version of the changes to the labour laws would be available in due course.

The Centre will, in theory, open in March, and Kate will have more information about it at the next LACE lunch.

Anne Verrinder of Acu-Nova explained that although most people associate acupuncture with pain relief, it works for other conditions too, including painful periods, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. There were also benefits in combining acupuncture with IVF to treat infertility problems.  She explained that Chinese medicine is very different to Western, working on the flow of energy through the body, using needles, pressure or even lasers. Acupuncture raises endorphin and serotonin levels and works on inflammatory conditions by raising the body’s own responses. Anne works in Palma, and her fees are 50€ for the first 90 minute session (which includes taking a detailed medical history) and 40€ for subsequent sessions. LACE members are entitled to a 20 % discount.

Glynis reminded everyone that Balearic Day is March 1st – starting a month of activities:

Personal coach Kay Newton spoke about another March event: International Women’s Day 2012 (the 101st), on March 8th at Lindner Hotel, Bendinat, 09:00-17:00 hrs. She explained that a lot of people were involved in the organisation, including Anne Verrinder, Vicki McLeod, Victoria Amengual, and Andrew Gardner, their “techie”.  A number of specialists will be speaking on the day, which also includes Anne Verrinder’s talk about the “Big O”, after lunch. The event offers gifts, fun, networking, a beehive area, and brings together 20 women’s clubs on the island. Tickets are 39 € and 59 € for VIPs. Prices rise on March 1st by 10 € and on the day will be 20 € extra. So . . . book ahead! www.internationalwomenmallorca.com

Helen Parker, Head of Client Services at Bufete Frau, spoke on behalf of Ibilab, who she also assists with British PR. Ibilab is a clinic in Palma specialising in fertility treatments, with high rates of success, similar to those at King’s College Hospital in London. They undertake some 200-300 treatments a year, with many women travelling from countries such as the UK and Germany. Helen informed everyone that the clinic also offers excellent gynaecologists, specialising in hormonal problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast care etc, and reminded everyone to keep up their smear tests. www.ibi-es.com

Tina Horne from the Sa Taronja Cultural Association in Andratx spoke about some of the many activities in March available for visitors to Sa Taronja – which receives no government funding. Highlights include their Calçotada on Sunday, 11th, and circus show by members of Circ Bover, with kids’ workshops, on Sunday, 25th. She mentioned the monthly Open Stage nights – great for a diverse range of talents, and the Tai Chi workshops run by LACE member Linda Wenzek-Barth – who donates all proceeds to Sa Taronja.  The centre is taking part in the Andratx Fair and Ruta de Tapas, at the end of March.  Tina reminded everyone that the Centre has space to rent, for between 20 and 120 people: halls can be hired by the hour for meetings, and there’s a theatre for presentations. It’s also a good party venue. www.sataronja.net

Simone Wyse from Reads  www.readshotel.com thanked everyone for coming and reminded them of the LACE 2-for-1 offer on menú del día at 19.50€ including IVA and also offered all those attending the lunch an additional  2 for 1 spa day offer for 25€ – both valid until March 31st. Finally, she introduced the new kitchen team, including chef Samuel Galdón, who worked previously at Reads, a decade ago.

The next LACE lunch will be on Wednesday, March 28th at the Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort, Portals Nous.

The February LACE lunch will be at the beautiful Reads Hotel in Santa Maria on Thursday 23rd February @ 13.00 – 15.30.

You will be able to network in style whilst enjoying a delicious 3-course meal and be one of the first to see the exciting changes that they have made over the winter break. Some 30 LACE members and guests attended October’s lunch, held for the first time at the Lebanese Restaurante Rotana in Palma’s Santa Catalina. There was the usual networking period before lunch, when cava and other drinks were served.

During a break between courses, Glynis German introduced the Hotspots:

Glynis German – Planet Space Self-Storage

Glynis reminded members of the benefits of self-storage, including the ability to upgrade or downsize your storage space according to seasonal needs. The company has two sites: Son Castelló in Palma and Son Bugadelles, Santa Ponsa – open 09.00-19.00 hrs Mondays to Fridays and 10.00-14.00 hrs Saturdays. She also announced the brand new site opened opposite Camp de Mar for yachting stuff, which will have fully automatic card access next year.

Planet Space Self-Storage accepts and stores items being donated to the charities Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz and Mediterranea ONG (Dr Stoma) and mentioned the latter’s particular need at this time for winter wear and blankets.

Glynis also announced that she’d recently attended a stand-up comedy workshop in Barcelona and was planning to organise a similar course here next March 16th-18th, which would end with a public performance for a fee-paying audience (participation in the latter not compulsory!). There is likely also to be a separate one-day workshop for those who would like to improve their presentation skills.

Jan Alford – Lloyds Bank International

For the benefit of those who didn’t know her, Jan introduced herself as someone who’d worked for Lloyds in the UK for 35 years and, here in Mallorca, for four years. For those who want English banking and personnel, they have two offices – one in Palma, the other in Santa Ponsa (used to be Banco Halifax España). They have recently launched new accounts and benefits, including travel insurance, and brought in new rates of interest on deposit accounts. Customers have the benefit of a phone number direct to their branch here (not a call centre) and enjoy personal service. For more information please contact Jan Alford.

Sally Luxmoore – Angels Nursing

Sally reminded members of the fundraising event for the Felix Fund on October 22nd at Mood Beach, which would benefit members of the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment Royal Logistics Corps by providing rest and recovery breaks on the island. Sally was selling raffle tickets for 5 € each and had been able to obtain some fabulous prizes.

Beverley Pugh – Pure Passion for Life

Beverley announced that she had recently hosted members of the Calvià council at her home for a raw food dinner.  She explained that she was a Hippocrates Health Educator, a qualified raw food coach, and a Reiki Master, adding that the Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida is the number one medicinal health spa, which offers a three-week life change programme. Its founder Dr Brian Clement had been in Madrid in June and they had held a joint conference for the first-time for a Spanish-speaking public. Beverley had brought free copies of the Institute’s magazine for those who wanted one.

She also mentioned her wheatgrass – she is the only person growing it on the island – in powdered form, (containing 103 vitamins and minerals to help alkalize the body). Other products include biscuits made through a dehydration process, from ingredients such as linseeds, buckwheat and spices – apt for those with gluten products. Find out more on her website www.purepassionforlife.com

Denise Wrobbel – Celebration of Women

Denise announced the venue for the calendar launch event (November 12th) as Sa Font Seca – a beautiful finca near Son Amar – and said it would be an amazing night. Tickets were going on sale in the next few days (including on-online) and would also be on sale at Joanna Young’s Estudio 3 in Portals Nous, at 100€ each.

Linda Wenzek-Barth

Linda announced that she was holding another ‘Introduction to Tai Chi’ workshop, at Sa Taronja on Wednesday, November 2nd, 10.00-12.30 hrs. Proceeds will go to the RANA Association in Palma. Contact her if you are interested in attending.

Upcoming LACE events . . .

The next lunch is at the Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort, Wednesday, November 16th. As last year, there would be table-tops available for those who want to sell items on the day. Please book in advance to secure yours.

Denise announced a special package available (from Jellyfish), with a discounted price for LACE members: a pre-show two-course supper at Forn de Sant Joan in Palma, followed by Christopher Cross concert at the Teatre Principal (part of the Jazz Voyeur Festival) on November 25th.

Tickets are 60€ for LACE members (65€ for non-members). To book, call 636 807 459 and say you are a LACE member.
