The February LACE lunch, held in the restaurant at Reads Hotel & Spa, was attended by 30 ladies.

After networking time over drinks, Glynis German welcomed everyone, and introduced herself as “space goddess” for Planet Space Self Storage (three locations on the island)  Glynis introduced each of the following Hotspot announcements from members.

First was Kate Mentink, on behalf of Europeos por España (EPORE, who announced the imminent opening of the European Centre for the Balearics, in Palma (opposite the Parliament building), following the model of the similar office in Brussels, which opened in 1985.  Foreigners starting a new business will be able to find information and advice here. The department will be open from Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-14:00 hrs for personal visits, phone or email enquiries. The centre won’t offer a lawyer or gestor service, but will be able to “point you in the right direction”. Kate, who will have an office in the Centre, said that many people didn’t know that there might be funding available to them from Europe, or the fiscal advantages of knowing the law. The new Ley de Emprendedores had already been translated into an English document and an English version of the changes to the labour laws would be available in due course.

The Centre will, in theory, open in March, and Kate will have more information about it at the next LACE lunch.

Anne Verrinder of Acu-Nova explained that although most people associate acupuncture with pain relief, it works for other conditions too, including painful periods, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. There were also benefits in combining acupuncture with IVF to treat infertility problems.  She explained that Chinese medicine is very different to Western, working on the flow of energy through the body, using needles, pressure or even lasers. Acupuncture raises endorphin and serotonin levels and works on inflammatory conditions by raising the body’s own responses. Anne works in Palma, and her fees are 50€ for the first 90 minute session (which includes taking a detailed medical history) and 40€ for subsequent sessions. LACE members are entitled to a 20 % discount.

Glynis reminded everyone that Balearic Day is March 1st – starting a month of activities:

Personal coach Kay Newton spoke about another March event: International Women’s Day 2012 (the 101st), on March 8th at Lindner Hotel, Bendinat, 09:00-17:00 hrs. She explained that a lot of people were involved in the organisation, including Anne Verrinder, Vicki McLeod, Victoria Amengual, and Andrew Gardner, their “techie”.  A number of specialists will be speaking on the day, which also includes Anne Verrinder’s talk about the “Big O”, after lunch. The event offers gifts, fun, networking, a beehive area, and brings together 20 women’s clubs on the island. Tickets are 39 € and 59 € for VIPs. Prices rise on March 1st by 10 € and on the day will be 20 € extra. So . . . book ahead!

Helen Parker, Head of Client Services at Bufete Frau, spoke on behalf of Ibilab, who she also assists with British PR. Ibilab is a clinic in Palma specialising in fertility treatments, with high rates of success, similar to those at King’s College Hospital in London. They undertake some 200-300 treatments a year, with many women travelling from countries such as the UK and Germany. Helen informed everyone that the clinic also offers excellent gynaecologists, specialising in hormonal problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast care etc, and reminded everyone to keep up their smear tests.

Tina Horne from the Sa Taronja Cultural Association in Andratx spoke about some of the many activities in March available for visitors to Sa Taronja – which receives no government funding. Highlights include their Calçotada on Sunday, 11th, and circus show by members of Circ Bover, with kids’ workshops, on Sunday, 25th. She mentioned the monthly Open Stage nights – great for a diverse range of talents, and the Tai Chi workshops run by LACE member Linda Wenzek-Barth – who donates all proceeds to Sa Taronja.  The centre is taking part in the Andratx Fair and Ruta de Tapas, at the end of March.  Tina reminded everyone that the Centre has space to rent, for between 20 and 120 people: halls can be hired by the hour for meetings, and there’s a theatre for presentations. It’s also a good party venue.

Simone Wyse from Reads thanked everyone for coming and reminded them of the LACE 2-for-1 offer on menú del día at 19.50€ including IVA and also offered all those attending the lunch an additional  2 for 1 spa day offer for 25€ – both valid until March 31st. Finally, she introduced the new kitchen team, including chef Samuel Galdón, who worked previously at Reads, a decade ago.

The next LACE lunch will be on Wednesday, March 28th at the Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort, Portals Nous.

Photographer Samantha Hemsley and her team are thrilled to say that all the photo shoots are now complete for the Celebration of Women 2012 Calendar and production will begin very soon. It has to be said the results are amazing and there is a huge buzz of excitement & anticipation to see the finished product!

The calendar is being produced to celebrate the lives of women aged 50 and over, to remember those we’ve lost through cancer, and through the sales of the calendar, raise money to help those currently suffering with the disease. It will be launched at a very special dinner on Saturday, November 12th which will raise additional funds & awareness for the cause.

The project is attracting a great deal of interest both here in Mallorca and in the UK,  and will feature in the special Gold 50th issue of acbMallorca due out in early September.

It is a great initiative for a great cause with some excellent sponsorship opportunities available for both the calendar and the launch event. For more details please email or call 626 079 080.

Krista Hyer starts English-speaking Cancer Support Group

For many years scores of Mallorca’s foreign residents have had nowhere to turn for support and advice when they hear the dreaded words, “you have cancer”. Now a group of past and present cancer sufferers are trying to ensure that the disease no longer has to be suffered in silence.

Krista, a councellor, decided it was time for such a group to be set up after being approached by an English lady undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Palma’s Son Espaces.  There are so many questions that patients need answers to such as ‘what’s the best product available in Spain for the itchy scalp you get when your hair falls out?’

Sufferers can experience a whole range of emotions from anger and denial to intense loneliness and hopelessness when they are diagnosed. They may need information about eating well or the physical changes they are experiencing, or need advice for relationship problems they are suffering as a result of their condition, the Cancer Support Group will be ready to listen and help
as much as possible.

The Macmillan organisation in the uk have been wonderful and have offered support to start the self-help and provide training, information and advice. Brooke Quinteros, a Macmillan speech and language therapist for people with head and neck cancer, said “I could never adequately describe the benefits a support group gives to patients, carers and professionals alike,” she went on to explain that “a friendly, informal, supportive atmosphere really helps to boost confidence, provide insight and establish long-lasting friendships for all involved.”

Krista would like to hear from recovered and current cancer patients and needs to find someone who can print some leaflets to hand out in hospitals, clinics and Doctors Surgeries. Everyone can help simply by spreading the word about the group and accompanying sufferers who are a little shy or nervous about going to a new group where they know no-one.

Writer and spiritual teacher Zulma Reyo spoke at the 13th April LACE lunch about her latest (and 6th) book The Inner Woman.

To live healthy, effective, inwardly rewarding lives as women begins with knowing what we are.

This book focuses on the awareness of feminine consciousness and its direct influence in the world.  In the spiritual dimension we are all the same but in the world men and women function very differently.

The feminine field of consciousness, The Inner Woman, gathers and brews the qualities and forces that colour creation.  Woman spontaneously does this emotionally and psychically as dynamic sourcing.  We are like a whirlpool of continuous creative motion.  This contrasts with the nature of the masculine gender that sets and handles forms.  In a very real way men are the builders and we are the space upon which they build.

This book is a manual for self-development, a call to specific work by women in all walks of life, inspired by the concept of a Mother God that represents the primordial engendering power within each of us.

Part One consists of questions and answers (as letters) calling for awareness of emotional sensitivity and intuition. The answers flow like healing nectar as we discover that nothing about us is linear or formal.  We gain courage to become the conscious sourcing agent of our lives and worlds.

Part Two prepares us for the female initiation through guided exercises.  It leads women to differentiate physical from emotional and mental perception and shows us how to embrace the nuances of emotion as well as the intensely flexible nature of our mind.

Part Three is about adding depth and amplitude, discernment and mobility to our creations, culminating in the acknowledgment of inherent ancient feminine wisdom.

In Mallorca, the book may be followed through with “The Inner Woman Programmes” called REVELATION.  Here women may learn to generate, handle and direct energy in a series of workshops, retreats and trainings designed to powerfully implement the spiritual element within daily life. This begins at Bodhana Wellness Centre on May 6th with a series of five workshops.  These may be followed by trainings and retreats.

For those of you who cannot come to the workshops, Zulma would like to offer the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the issues more deeply and answer questions: woman to woman, informally, intimately.  There is no cost involved.  The most important thing for her is sharing this dynamic and making it understandable.  Zulma truly believes that it can lighten our loads and bring many solutions to our lives and those of our loved ones. So… if you’d like to get a group of your friends together, please contact her by email:

Zulma is also looking for someone in the UK who might like to organize book reading sessions with questions and answers?  If anyone has any connection to someone who might be interested, please could you put Zulma in touch with such a networker?  Readings are held for both men and women. Thank you. ·
