The Five Tibetan Rites

These five simple, yoga-like exercises made famous by Peter Kelder’s book “The Eye of Revelation” first published in 1939, and reissued as “Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth” in 1947, have succeeded in fascinating millions of people throughout the world with their rejuvenating effect. Credited for everything from increased energy to a better memory, weight loss and just looking and feeling younger,  they are simple to learn and require very little effort, other than the willpower to do them.

Even if you practice no other sports, the Five Tibetan Rites offer a very complete exercise program, for in contrast to most western sports,  the Rites address every system of the body – the endocrine system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the nervous system, the musculatory system, every organ, as well as the body’s energy centers, the chakras are influenced in a positive way.

The February LACE lunch, held in the restaurant at Reads Hotel & Spa, was attended by 30 ladies.

After networking time over drinks, Glynis German welcomed everyone, and introduced herself as “space goddess” for Planet Space Self Storage (three locations on the island) www.planetspacestorage.com.  Glynis introduced each of the following Hotspot announcements from members.

First was Kate Mentink, on behalf of Europeos por España (EPORE www.epore.org), who announced the imminent opening of the European Centre for the Balearics, in Palma (opposite the Parliament building), following the model of the similar office in Brussels, which opened in 1985.  Foreigners starting a new business will be able to find information and advice here. The department will be open from Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-14:00 hrs for personal visits, phone or email enquiries. The centre won’t offer a lawyer or gestor service, but will be able to “point you in the right direction”. Kate, who will have an office in the Centre, said that many people didn’t know that there might be funding available to them from Europe, or the fiscal advantages of knowing the law. The new Ley de Emprendedores had already been translated into an English document and an English version of the changes to the labour laws would be available in due course.

The Centre will, in theory, open in March, and Kate will have more information about it at the next LACE lunch.

Anne Verrinder of Acu-Nova explained that although most people associate acupuncture with pain relief, it works for other conditions too, including painful periods, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. There were also benefits in combining acupuncture with IVF to treat infertility problems.  She explained that Chinese medicine is very different to Western, working on the flow of energy through the body, using needles, pressure or even lasers. Acupuncture raises endorphin and serotonin levels and works on inflammatory conditions by raising the body’s own responses. Anne works in Palma, and her fees are 50€ for the first 90 minute session (which includes taking a detailed medical history) and 40€ for subsequent sessions. LACE members are entitled to a 20 % discount.

Glynis reminded everyone that Balearic Day is March 1st – starting a month of activities:

Personal coach Kay Newton spoke about another March event: International Women’s Day 2012 (the 101st), on March 8th at Lindner Hotel, Bendinat, 09:00-17:00 hrs. She explained that a lot of people were involved in the organisation, including Anne Verrinder, Vicki McLeod, Victoria Amengual, and Andrew Gardner, their “techie”.  A number of specialists will be speaking on the day, which also includes Anne Verrinder’s talk about the “Big O”, after lunch. The event offers gifts, fun, networking, a beehive area, and brings together 20 women’s clubs on the island. Tickets are 39 € and 59 € for VIPs. Prices rise on March 1st by 10 € and on the day will be 20 € extra. So . . . book ahead! www.internationalwomenmallorca.com

Helen Parker, Head of Client Services at Bufete Frau, spoke on behalf of Ibilab, who she also assists with British PR. Ibilab is a clinic in Palma specialising in fertility treatments, with high rates of success, similar to those at King’s College Hospital in London. They undertake some 200-300 treatments a year, with many women travelling from countries such as the UK and Germany. Helen informed everyone that the clinic also offers excellent gynaecologists, specialising in hormonal problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast care etc, and reminded everyone to keep up their smear tests. www.ibi-es.com

Tina Horne from the Sa Taronja Cultural Association in Andratx spoke about some of the many activities in March available for visitors to Sa Taronja – which receives no government funding. Highlights include their Calçotada on Sunday, 11th, and circus show by members of Circ Bover, with kids’ workshops, on Sunday, 25th. She mentioned the monthly Open Stage nights – great for a diverse range of talents, and the Tai Chi workshops run by LACE member Linda Wenzek-Barth – who donates all proceeds to Sa Taronja.  The centre is taking part in the Andratx Fair and Ruta de Tapas, at the end of March.  Tina reminded everyone that the Centre has space to rent, for between 20 and 120 people: halls can be hired by the hour for meetings, and there’s a theatre for presentations. It’s also a good party venue. www.sataronja.net

Simone Wyse from Reads  www.readshotel.com thanked everyone for coming and reminded them of the LACE 2-for-1 offer on menú del día at 19.50€ including IVA and also offered all those attending the lunch an additional  2 for 1 spa day offer for 25€ – both valid until March 31st. Finally, she introduced the new kitchen team, including chef Samuel Galdón, who worked previously at Reads, a decade ago.

The next LACE lunch will be on Wednesday, March 28th at the Lindner Golf & Wellness Resort, Portals Nous.

PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOPwith Logan Murray

Venue:  Mood Beach, Portals Registration: 09.30 Workshop: 10.00 – 17.00

We may have a lot of ideas in our head, but sometimes communicating them can be a real problem:

What stops us performing at our best?

What causes us to freeze up when we would best be served by being dynamic?

The answer is that we each carry an idea of who we are in our head that traps us. We adopt a social mask that inhibits our creativity. We love to pigeon hole ourselves as responsible adults, serious people, the ‘firm but fair’ boss, the office wag, – in short, we are all playing at being grown ups. But no one has a clue what this really means!  I would like to suggest that instead of playing at being an Adult, we turn off our social editors and allow ourselves to play at being Fools. What do comedians do that makes them look so damned attractive to the members of the public? How can you emulate that? The course is designed to help confidence building, creativity and communication skills. Find out how easy it is to ‘play’ at being confident. And discover how your internal editor can hinder the creative process. We will be exploring the rudiments of comedy through games and writing, culminating in a series of readings and recitals.

COURSE CONTENTS

The day will cover three basic areas:

Who are you?

  • We will play a number of games designed to unlock the creative communicator that lies within each of us, but which is usually buried under a weight of mundane trivia.
  • We will examine Status Dynamics in groups to learn how to avoid becoming trapped in a role that makes us less productive (and less fulfilled!).
  • We will learn to play with Attitude, to find the humour in any situation.
  • We will learn to look and listen in greater detail to the way people say things.

Learning to Stand Up

  • We will learn to match thought with deed, so that we can communicate exactly the message we are trying to convey. It’s no good trying to be bold if you’re taking an involuntary step backwards!
  • Learn to play the moment rather than being embedded in the past.
  • Find out how the person everyone believes you to be prevents you from being the person you really are. Eliminate the deadwood!
  • Learn to communicate with clarity, conviction and humour.

Putting on a Show

  • Applying everything we’ve learnt to improve our performance.
  • Writing (and performing) some material that will prove how funny you really are.
  • Learn how easy it is to make people laugh with your own written material: never again will you have to say in a speech “I am reminded of the story…”!
  • Learn the structure of Jokes.

About me and Acupuncture

Annie trained primarily as a nurse and worked for many years in the NHS in a variety of different posts including intensive care and as a Nurse practitioner in General practice.  In her early 20´s she suffered a back injury from a work related incident ..the pain became chronic until after having children Annie found herself completely incapacitated and taking regular opiate based medication….not good for a young mum of 29!   she discovered Acupuncture as a way of dealing with the pain…despite the fact she was terrified of needles!  After this she decided to go on and train as an acupuncturist in order to help other people receive the same benefits.  Annie is also a trained counsellor and wears another hat on the island as “my intimate Guru” helping people with their intimate relationship problems.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are extremely successful in the treatment of a multitude of conditions. Many people try Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a “last resort” to serious and complex medical problems and find that it can help them when other treatments could not.

Acupuncture is also often used as a preventative medicine. Many people see their acupuncturist only 2-4 times a year for a “tune up” or “balancing” treatment. This can prevent disease and promote health, energy and vitality.

Your acupuncturist will have to look at the onset of your condition and see what your constitutional diagnosis is to determine if Oriental Medicine can help you.  Each case is unique and it would be difficult to determine how effective acupuncture would be for you without a full assessment.

The most common ailments presented to an acupuncturist tend to be pain related conditions. For example; arthritis, back, neck, knee and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica.  However there are a multitude of other problems that can be treated very successfully such as:

Addictions ·  Allergies · Anxiety · Chronic fatigue · Depression · Hay-fever · IBS · Infertility problems · Insomnia · Menopausal symptoms · Migraine · Pain   Stress · Painful periods · PMS Morning sickness · Sinusitis · Weight control

In her practice Annie say´s there is one overwhelming sensation she has noticed in her patients over the years, it is the deep sense of relaxation they almost always feel during and after their treatment. Many of her patients fall asleep during their session and this deep sense of relaxation can last for hours and for some, days.

So what causes it? Research has shown that Acupuncture causes the body to release neuro-transmitters such as endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates which relieve pain and increase the patient’s relaxation response.

Endorphins and serotonin also stimulate the adrenal gland which secretes cortisol. Cortisol is the body’s stress-fighting and anti-inflammatory hormone. It helps to regulate immune functions, blood pressure, and glucose metabolism. Thus, the patient can see, over the course of treatments, not only physical improvements but emotional and mental well being as well.
